Promoting Decentralized Waste Management through Satellite centre |
The city of Pune, with its fast growing population and economic activity faces severe problems in terms of solid waste management. The quantities of solid waste are increasing each year and the waste characteristics are getting complex day by day. It is essential to reduce the overall quantum and efficiently dispose off the waste. Source based approach of waste segregation rather than 'end pipe solution' is the most effective way of handling the issue. Praj Foundation & INORA are jointly implementing the project of Decentralized Waste Management through 8 Satellite centres located in different parts of the city. Each such Satellite centre is equipped with charts, extension material, inputs and other essential supplies. Training programmes are being organized to develop 'Master Composter' in each of these centres. Thus over a period of next 2 months 160 'Master Composters' will be trained.
Each of the 8 centres aims to provide technical backup and reach out to 4000 citizens and at least 30 household level composting projects be established around each such satellite centre. Video documentation will also be used to enhance effectiveness along with an annual meet cum exhibition to share the success stories and experiences gained by the participants in the programme.
